On All Fools' Day in 2000, we started a publishing house. We named it Permanent Black.
We began Permanent Black with small savings and published one book, somewhat ominously titled The Decline and Fall of the Indus Civilization (edited by Nayanjot Lahiri). The book is still in print.
After a while we needed to make a bookshelf for our books, and then another.
Improbably, happily, twenty-five years later, we are still making books. The picture below shows our office, and our staff: Biscoot, Barauni, Piku, Soda, and Jarrie.
(The basic qualification for support staff at our office is the possession of tails and fur.)

We could not have continued publishing for all these years without the support of Nandini Rao and Krishnadeva Rao at Orient Blackswan, Rudrangshu Mukherjee at Ashoka University, Thomas Abraham and Priya Singh at Hachette India, and Shyama Warner, Neelima Rao, S.P. Dangwal, Sumit Sapra, Rajiv Gupta and Mani Iyer.
Most of all, we are grateful to the scholars and writers who have trusted us with their work.
